- Check Qualifications:
- Make sure whoever is homeschooling your child is qualified. This means you, as a parent or guardian, need to have a high school diploma or GED. You can also hire a tutor to help out, as long as they meet the same qualifications.
- Submit Your Intent:
- Within 30 days of starting homeschooling, and then by September 1 every year, you need to file a “declaration of intent” with the Georgia Department of Education. This form is available online and needs to include your students’ names and ages, where your homeschool is located, the local school system, and your school year’s 12-month period.
- Plan Your School Year:
- Aim for 180 days of instruction per year, with each day having at least four and a half hours of learning, unless there are special circumstances.
- Cover the Basics:
- Make sure your curriculum includes essential subjects like reading, language arts, math, social studies, and science.
- Track Progress:
- At the end of each school year, jot down a progress report for your child in the required subjects. Keep these reports for three years; there’s no need to send them to anyone.
- Testing Time:
- Every three years, starting after 3rd grade, your child needs to take a standardized test. You can give the test yourself if you consult with someone trained in these tests. No need to share results with public school officials.
