In Texas, homeschools are classified as private schools. Families who choose to homeschool are not required to notify the state, and there are no teacher qualification, assessment, or immunization requirements.
To homeschool legally, you must:
1. Teach the required subjects
State law requires instruction in:
- Math
- Reading
- Spelling and grammar
- A course in good citizenship
While science and history are not mandated by Texas law, most colleges expect them for admission. Including them in your curriculum is strongly recommended.
2. Use a written curriculum
Under Texas Supreme Court interpretation of private school law, your homeschool must use some form of written curriculum and operate in a bona fide manner. Online programs satisfy this requirement.
Compulsory attendance: Ages 6–19
If contacted by a public school
If your local public school asks where your child is enrolled, you can respond with a letter confirming that your child is being lawfully educated at home.
