California Homeschool Law 2024/25

In California, you have three options for homeschooling privately, so you can pick the one that fits your family’s needs best. Here’s a relaxed breakdown of your choices:

  • Option 1: Home-Based Private School
    • File an annual private school affidavit with the California Superintendent of Public Instruction between October 1 and October 15 each year.
    • Keep an attendance register.
    • Teach in English.
    • Ensure instructors are qualified.
    • Cover typical public school subjects like language arts, math, science, social studies, health, and driver training.
    • Keep immunization records or personal beliefs exemption.
    • Maintain a list of courses and instructors’ details.
  • Option 2: Private School Satellite Program (PSP)
    • Most teaching happens at home.
    • Follow the same rules as a home-based private school.
  • Option 3: Instruction by a Private Tutor
    • A tutor with a California teaching credential covers the required subjects.
    • Teach at least 3 hours a day, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., for 175 days a year.
    • Parents can also be tutors if they have the credential.
    • No need to file affidavits or report to the state.
