District of Columbia Homeschool Law

  • Check Your Qualifications
    • To homeschool in D.C., you need a high school diploma or equivalent.
    • If you don’t have one, you can request a waiver from the OSSE by showing you can provide a solid education.
    • HSLDA members can contact us for help with waivers.
  • Let D.C. Know You’re Homeschooling
    • Use the official form from the OSSE to notify them.
    • Submit it 15 days before starting and by August 15 every year.
    • Include your diploma or GED copy initially. If it’s missing, a cover letter will do.
    • Missed the August 15 deadline? HSLDA members can reach out for advice.
  • Teach Thoroughly and Regularly
    • Your homeschooling should be comprehensive and consistent.
    • You don’t have to match public school hours exactly but aim for a regular schedule.
    • HSLDA members can get personalized advice if needed.
  • Cover the Required Subjects
    • Teach language arts, math, science, social studies, art, music, health, and P.E.
  • Keep a Portfolio
    • Maintain evidence of your child’s work for a year.
    • It shows your child is learning thoroughly and regularly.
  • Be Ready for OSSE Reviews
    • OSSE might request to review your portfolio up to twice a year.
    • They must notify you in writing, and reviews are set by mutual agreement.
    • HSLDA members should contact us if this happens.
  • Discontinue Notification
    • Inform the D.C. if you stop homeschooling.
